Glossary
Doujinshi
Self-published comics, novels, or art books circulated through fan markets and specialty shops.
What it means
Doujinshi culture includes many non-adult works. Adult doujinshi is one prominent strand, often based on existing characters, and it has its own ethics debates about consent, parody, and commerce.
History / origin
Comic markets and print-on-demand tools scaled fan publishing. Adult titles became internationally famous, which sometimes made outsiders treat all doujinshi as pornography.
How the term is used in Japan
In Japan the word primarily signals a mode of production and circulation. Whether a booklet is adult is a secondary fact, not the definition.
Common misunderstandings
- Doujinshi does not mean adult comic by default.
- It is not the same distribution system as commercial AV.
- Fan-market culture has rules and taboos that overseas summaries often skip.
