Adult manga is a major Japanese media field with its own magazines, artists, and retail zones. It overlaps with doujinshi and with export hentai labeling without being identical to either.
History / origin
Twentieth-century manga markets developed adult shelves alongside youth and seinen categories. Digital stores later mirrored those separations with age gates.
How the term is used in Japan
Domestic readers usually specify magazines or genres rather than the English word hentai. Retail architecture makes the adult section a visible social fact.
Common misunderstandings
- Adult manga is not live-action AV.
- Not all mature-themed manga is sold as adult manga.
- Export tags can misfile literary erotic manga beside purely pornographic works.
