History / origin
From the 1980s boom through the DVD era, specialty and general rental chains carried adult sections under local rules. Digital streaming later hollowed out the physical aisle without erasing its cultural memory.
How the term is used in Japan
People still use rental-shop nostalgia in comedy and essays. For younger viewers the shop may be a story about parents' generation rather than a weekly habit.
Common misunderstandings
- Rental shops were never the whole industry.
- A closed shop does not mean AV culture ended.
