Adult DVDs carried maker brands, jacket photography, and catalog numbers into living rooms and rental shelves. The object taught fans to read industrial metadata.
History / origin
DVD replaced tape as the default consumer format, then competed with downloads and streaming. Collecting cover art and limited editions became its own subculture.
How the term is used in Japan
Even in a streaming age, DVD language survives in product codes and jacket aesthetics reused as thumbnails.
