Glossary

Obscenity

The legal and moral category under which Japanese law has long restricted sexual expression, especially under Article 175 debates.

What it means

Obscenity is the abstract noun behind mosaic practice, prosecution risk, and public argument about art versus harm. It is a moving target in court and culture.

History / origin

Modern Japanese obscenity doctrine evolved through prosecutions of literature, photography, and film long before AV. Video inherited that argument.

How the term is used in Japan

Serious Japanese discussion treats obscenity as law and philosophy. Tabloid talk treats it as spice. Both tones exist.

Common misunderstandings

  • Obscenity law is not identical with the Anti-Prostitution Law.
  • Calling a work obscene in English slang is not a Japanese verdict.
  • Historical prosecutions are research topics, not templates for new illegal distribution.
