Glossary

Mosaic

The common English name for the pixelation or blur applied to genitals in Japanese commercial adult video.

What it means

Mosaic is the visible mark of how Japan's commercial AV industry has long handled legal and ethical pressure around obscenity standards. It is a production convention, not a genre, and not proof that a title is somehow less adult.

History / origin

As home video and later digital distribution expanded, industry practice settled on covering certain imagery rather than testing every boundary of Article 175 in court. The mosaic became a shared technical and cultural shorthand.

How the term is used in Japan

Domestic viewers treat mosaic as ordinary packaging noise. Overseas discussion often turns it into a fetish or a moral argument. Inside Japan it is closer to industrial compliance language.

Common misunderstandings

  • Mosaic does not mean Japanese audiences prefer censored imagery as an aesthetic first principle.
  • Removing mosaic is not the same as making a work legal under Japanese distribution rules.
  • Mosaic is not unique evidence that Japan is uniquely prudish; it is one negotiated answer to a specific legal history.
