Mizu Shobai
Literally water trade: a traditional phrase for nightlife hospitality work, including bars and hostess clubs.
What it means
Mizu shobai is older cultural language for unstable, night-timed entertainment labor. It overlaps with but is not identical to sexual-service fuzoku categories.
History / origin
Edo-to-modern pleasure economies left a metaphor of floating water. Twentieth-century cabaret and bar work kept the phrase alive.
How the term is used in Japan
People still say mizu shobai to name a career world. It can sound dated, literary, or bluntly realistic depending on speaker.
Common misunderstandings
- Mizu shobai is not a legal statute name.
- It does not automatically mean prostitution.
- Romanticizing the water trade erases labor and stigma realities.
