Glossary
Kanrakugai
An entertainment district; in adult-culture writing, often the nightlife and adult-business clusters of a city.
What it means
Kanrakugai is geography plus reputation. It names zones where theaters, bars, love hotels, and classified businesses concentrate, and where journalism goes when it wants a skyline of neon as shorthand.
History / origin
Modern kanrakugai inherit older pleasure-quarter patterns while living under contemporary zoning and policing. Each city's map is local history.
How the term is used in Japan
Japanese news uses the word as a place-type. Listing famous districts is cultural geography, not a tour itinerary.
Common misunderstandings
- Kanrakugai is not one nationwide franchise.
- Neon photographs are not consent education.
- District fame is not a ranking of services.
