Glossary
18+
The common age-label marking media or spaces as intended for adults eighteen and over.
What it means
Eighteen-plus is packaging ethics: a visible claim about audience. In Japan it marks games, comics, videos, and websites, tying consumer media to majority-age norms.
History / origin
Rating stickers and site banners standardized the mark across industries. International platforms brought familiar icons into Japanese storefronts too.
How the term is used in Japan
People say eighteen-plus as casually as they say AV. The label can be protective, stigmatizing, or both.
Common misunderstandings
- Eighteen-plus is not a genre aesthetic.
- The mark does not settle every legal question about content.
- JPGRL will not advise minors on bypassing labels.
