Stigma

The social disgrace attached to adult-industry work and consumption in Japanese public life.

What it means

Stigma explains why stage names, retirement announcements, and second careers are such charged stories. It is a cultural force as real as any statute.

History / origin

Family norms, marriage markets, corporate hiring, and tabloid cruelty all reproduce stigma. Activist and industry pushback also have histories.

How the term is used in Japan

Japanese conversation may soften stigma with humor or deepen it with silence. Overseas fandom sometimes denies stigma exists because content is abundant.

Common misunderstandings

  • Stigma is not proof that every performer regrets their work.
  • Abundance of media does not equal social acceptance.
  • Explaining stigma is not an excuse for harassment.
