Glossary
Photobook
Bound photography collections, often tied to gravure, idol, or AV performer branding.
What it means
Photobooks are physical prestige objects and career milestones. They sit between magazine culture and video careers, and they often travel farther into mainstream bookstores than discs do.
History / origin
Idol and gravure economies long used photobooks as calendar events. AV performers later adopted similar release rituals, including signing events discussed in entertainment news.
How the term is used in Japan
Japanese readers may treat a photobook as a gift object or a collectible. Overseas fans sometimes treat it only as an image dump.
Common misunderstandings
- A photobook is not automatically an AV release.
- Bookstore placement does not erase adult-adjacent stigma for every title.
- Signing events are media rituals, not invitations for strangers to invent access tips.
